Many homeowners think painting is just about choosing a color. In reality, the quality of a paint job depends heavily on what happens before the paint goes on.
One of the most important — and most misunderstood — steps is skim coating.
What Is Skim Coating?
Skim coating is the process of applying a thin layer of joint compound to walls or ceilings to create a smooth, even surface. Once it dries, the surface is sanded and prepped for paint.
It’s not always necessary — but when it is, skipping it shows.
Signs Your Walls Need Skim Coating
You may need skim coating if:
You see uneven textures or patched areas
Old repairs are visible through the paint
Walls have cracks, peeling paint, or bubbling
The apartment has many years of layered paint
You removed wallpaper
In NYC apartments especially, walls often have decades of repairs underneath the surface. Paint alone will not hide that.
Why Skim Coating Matters
Painting over damaged or uneven walls will:
Highlight imperfections instead of hiding them
Cause flashing (uneven sheen)
Reduce the lifespan of the paint job
Skim coating creates a clean foundation so the final result looks smooth, professional, and intentional.
How We Approach It
At A-Z Projects, we evaluate each space carefully. If skim coating isn’t needed, we won’t recommend it. If it is, we explain why, what areas need it, and how it affects the final result.
Good paint starts with good prep — and skim coating is often the difference between “freshly painted” and “professionally finished.”
